THE FOUNDRA TAKE

Measure a vendor’s effect on a business task separately from a bank’s changes to its own process.

Two initiatives, not one rollout

BDC announced Mission AI and AI Studio on November 2, assigning one to technology adoption by businesses and the other to changes inside the institution. BDC’s November 2 announcement names separate leaders and describes separate operating remits. It reports the launch of the initiatives, not completed productivity gains or faster financing already achieved.

Mission AI will identify the needs of small and medium-sized businesses, match those needs with Canadian AI solutions and use a panel of entrepreneurs to test tools in real businesses. Dominic Gagnon will lead it as managing director. For an enterprise-software supplier, this is an announced testing and adoption programme, not evidence that its product has been selected or a distribution contract awarded.

Who does which job

AI Studio will be led by technology entrepreneur Raff Paquin. BDC says it aims to simplify processes, improve service and help entrepreneurs obtain financing faster. Its proposed method is to test changes, measure their impact and scale what works.

The distinction is operational. Mission AI places the test in a business using a tool. AI Studio places it in BDC’s own financing and support journey. A successful outside pilot would not prove that the bank’s internal process had improved, and an internal process change would not validate an unrelated supplier’s software.

Our analysis is that suppliers should treat a potential pilot as a specific task test. The relevant account would include the work being automated, setup effort and time spent resolving exceptions. A general claim that AI improves productivity would provide less useful evidence than a result tied to the business’s actual workflow.

FOUNDRA EXPLAINS

Separate evidence for the two initiatives

01

Mission AI

Test whether a selected tool helps with a defined SME task.

02

AI Studio

Identify which stage of BDC’s financing or support journey is being changed.

03

Measure separately

Baseline effort, implementation cost and exceptions matter; the launch does not prove programme outcomes.

An editorial framework for understanding the trade-offs. Not company performance data.

What the launch establishes

The announcement gives businesses the programme names, leaders and intended scope. It does not supply a final vendor list, a demonstrated change in loan turnaround time or a programme outcome that can be attributed to either initiative. Its accompanying adoption-survey discussion is background, not an evaluation of programmes just launched.

For founders, the immediate distinction is simple: Mission AI concerns testing tools in their businesses; AI Studio concerns their experience with BDC itself. Those are different routes to value, and they should remain different lines in any later account of results.
