Build a workflow that records what a provenance check establishes, preserves uncertainty and makes the next verification step clear.
What happened
Google announced on October 6 that it is expanding SynthID Detector access to everyone, globally in English. Its announcement describes checks for images, video and audio generated by Google or participating partners. The company previously introduced an early version for media professionals. The current rollout extends a verification workflow to a wider audience; it does not establish that every synthetic file can be detected.
Our analysis
The useful business question is what a product does after receiving a result. A media marketplace, customer-support tool or content management system needs a decision path, not simply another badge. A finding may help route a file for review, document its stated origin or trigger a request for more context. Each use has different consequences for the person submitting it.
That puts interface design close to the centre of the problem. A product should preserve the distinction between evidence of origin and the truth of the scene depicted. A generated illustration can accompany an accurate article. A camera image can carry a misleading caption. Treating one signal as a verdict on the entire communication would compress several different questions into one answer.
A media-provenance decision
Inspect the available signal
Identify which provenance information the tool can detect.
Read its limitations
Recognise when missing signals leave the question unresolved.
Check the original source
Combine the signal with source and context checks.
Make the editorial decision
Avoid treating a detection result as a complete fact check.
What remains uncertain
Our source review does not establish independent detection accuracy, resilience to every edit or coverage of every generation service. Those are separate technical questions that require testing. Nor does the company announcement settle how a particular startup should handle appeals, ambiguous results or files from unsupported tools. Product teams need to identify which of these limitations matters in their own setting.
What founders should watch
Start with one concrete workflow: for example, checking material before it enters an editorial queue. Record which check ran, when it ran and what it actually returned. Keep the original file and relevant context where appropriate, and provide a route for a person to challenge a consequential decision.
The strategic opportunity is less about displaying an AI label everywhere and more about making uncertainty manageable. A clear review process can give customers an understandable reason for the next step. A dramatic certainty claim can create expectations the underlying evidence has never met.
