A small market that repeatedly clears is stronger evidence than a large directory that rarely produces a transaction.
Define the match precisely
A marketplace is useful when a buyer can find suitable supply within an acceptable time, place and price range. The relevant unit may be a neighbourhood, a time slot or a specialised category. Counting every registered buyer and seller together can obscure these constraints. A buyer looking for a service tomorrow gains little from a large pool of unavailable providers in another city.
Measure successful attempts
Track how many genuine purchase attempts find a suitable option, how long the match takes and whether the transaction completes. In a hypothetical local repair marketplace, a request that receives several irrelevant quotes is not equivalent to one that books an available specialist. Record why requests fail. Lack of supply, poor information and unsuitable pricing call for different interventions.
The liquidity loop
Intent
Identify a real purchase request.
Availability
Find suitable supply at the right time.
Completion
Observe a successful transaction.
Repeat
Confirm quality and return usage.
Concentrate before expanding
Choose a narrow segment where the team can create dependable availability. Help suppliers present the information buyers need and remove avoidable friction from booking. Expanding geography too early can divide limited supply and customer attention across many weak markets. A concentrated launch makes it easier to see whether the matching process works and whether customers return without being persuaded from scratch.

Watch quality after the match
Completion alone does not capture cancellations, disputes or a disappointing service. Include those outcomes in the operating picture and examine repeat use. A marketplace’s rules should make reliability worthwhile for both sides. Founders should expand after understanding the conditions that create repeatable matches, then test whether those conditions exist in the next segment. Growth is more durable when it replicates working liquidity instead of multiplying empty listings.
