A strong revenue story becomes more credible when a founder can reconcile it to contracts and cash.
Define the measure before using it
Annual recurring revenue is commonly used to express a recurring business at an annualised rate. Bookings describe contracted business, while cash records money received. Their timing can differ substantially. A customer might sign a multi-year agreement, start using the product later and pay in instalments. Calling the full contract value annual recurring revenue would obscure those differences rather than clarify growth.
Use a simple reconciliation
Imagine a hypothetical software company signs a two-year subscription worth $24,000, evenly priced at $1,000 a month, with no one-time services. The total contracted value is $24,000. The annualised recurring run rate is $12,000 once the subscription is active under the company’s stated definition. If the first monthly invoice is paid, cash collected at that point is only $1,000.

Reconcile

Keep edge cases explicit
Implementation fees, usage charges, discounts and contracts not yet started deserve separate treatment. A metric policy should explain which items are included and when. Apply the same policy across periods. Changing a definition can make the chart improve without changing the underlying business. If the definition changes for a sound reason, show the effect rather than quietly comparing unlike numbers.

Build the operating view
The useful management report connects active recurring revenue to new sales, expansion, contraction and churn, then shows collections separately. Finance and sales should be able to investigate the same customer record without arguing about labels. For a founder, this is more than presentation hygiene. It helps identify whether a growth problem comes from selling, activating, retaining or collecting, and each of those problems needs a different response.
