THE FOUNDRA TAKE

Design the trial around a demonstrated result, then make the next paid step easy to understand.

Define what the trial is testing

A trial is an opportunity for a potential customer to decide whether the product solves a real problem. Specify the first useful result before choosing how many days to offer. For one product that may be completing a workflow; for another it may require importing data and sharing an output with a colleague. A timer alone does not create evidence of value.

Remove the wrong obstacles

List every step between registration and the useful result. Separate work that is necessary for the task from information the company merely wants to collect. A hypothetical reporting tool might let a user explore a sample first, then connect real data when the benefit is clear. The sample should demonstrate the workflow honestly, without suggesting that the customer’s own integration is already complete.

FOUNDRA EXPLAINS

The trial’s evidence path

01

02

Activate

Help the user reach it quickly.

03

Observe

Find where real work stalls.

04

Convert

Explain the paid continuation clearly.

Measure progress instead of logins

Track whether users reach the meaningful task, how long it takes and where they stop. A login can reflect curiosity or confusion. A completed, revisited result is a stronger signal. Review a small number of stalled trials directly to learn whether the obstacle is missing data, unclear instructions, a technical failure or a mismatch between the product and the user’s actual need.

Make the commercial transition explicit

Before the trial ends, explain what will happen to access, stored work and billing. Avoid treating accidental conversion as evidence of product-market fit. Compare paid retention after different trial designs, not just the immediate conversion percentage. A trial is working when it helps suitable customers make an informed decision and gives the team a clear explanation of why unsuitable prospects did not continue.
